People tickle me with this “if we go see Red Tails/Pariah/The Next Hyped POC movie & help it be a success, maybe just maybe, Hollywood will change” school of thought.

The reality is “liberal” Hollywood doesn’t care about POC or POC stories, regardless of their potential to turn a profit. There’s a reason Tyler Perry is the only Black director regularly making movies & it sure aint because Hollywood is particularly charitable. The movie industry (like everything else in life) was created for & upheld by people who choose to exclude us.

Hollywood has no investment in us as actual human beings (let alone us being treated as three dimensional individuals) which is why it’s so easy for them to co-opt POC lives/stories in total (Angelina as Mariane Pearl, Ben Affleck as Tony Mendoza, etc) for their white stars & make movie after movie after movie about Heroic White Guy/Nice White Lady Saves Poor, Ignorant, Downtrodden POC (Dangerous Minds, Freedom Writers, The Blindside, The Help, The Secret Life Of Bees, etc).

That being said, feel free to support POC art (of any kind), just don’t fool yourself that the exception will somehow magically become the standard.
