Dear social construct of whiteness,
You completely erase people of color from the past, the present, and the future in all forms of media, insist that we should make our own stuff, get pissed off when we do (or go out of your way to center yourselves in our stories), and then you claim we’re uneducated because we don’t want to read about you forever. I kind of hate your face right now. But that’s okay. I’m going to write adventure stories for black boys and girls with no history lessons and they’re going to be great. Fuck you if you can’t stand that they exist.
A mom is who sick of your shit*
*Spent some time today trying to find books for my oldest that are YA, adventure with black male leads. Or any male leads of color. I’ll let you guess how many there are, & how many of them are history lessons about slavery and Jim Crow in not quite disguise. All that guff about black kids and reading ignores the reality that they’re barely in literature at any age, much less in fun literature once they hit an age where they can choose what they read. If you can live with only being a Magical Negro or an evil force? There’s still some stuff to read. But if you want the hero to look like you, if you want stories set in areas where you live? You’re better off with comic books. And we all know how few black male leads there are in those or how many black women get to be the focus. I just…I am in ranty Mom pants right now.
