I’m writing to ask you all a huge favor. But first, bear with me. I have to first tell you a story.
During my 6-month Africans for Africa project last year, I met Lindiwe (not a real name), a retired, 60-something year old African woman. Lindiwe had been running an orphanage out of her own home for the past 10 years. The government had agreed to offer her some money every month to care for up to two children, but the amount was no where near what she needed to care for the twenty-seven she’d taken in.
You see, most of their parents had passed away from HIV/AIDS, or abandoned them when they moved away to find more work. Lindiwe could barely afford to replace their tattered clothes, let alone their school uniforms. If not for the charity of a wholesale grocery store that donated canned goods each month, Lindiwe wouldn’t have been able to feed the orphans in her care at all.
But, one day, a young white American couple (that had been backpacking through the region) arrived at her doorstep, and offered to help Lindiwe raise money from abroad. The plan was to set up a non-profit in the U.S. to serve as a fiscal sponsor (i.e. serve as an umbrella organization) to the orphanage, which would enable them to collect tax-deductible donations from their network back in the states. Lindiwe couldn’t believe her luck. And, perhaps she shouldn’t have.
There are Very Wrong Ways to Do Good
Elated, Lindiwe gave the young white Americans copies of her non-profit’s official documents, which, as planned, the couple used to validate their US-based non-profit as an umbrella org for the project. Their website went up, along with photos of the orphans they’d met on their backpacking trip, and then the tax-deductible donations began to come in.
Initially, the couple sent Lindiwe money to pay for school uniforms–a mere two hundred dollars–and promised more would follow as they continued to spread the word. Thus, as they announced fundraisers — a few even hosted by celebrities — on their website, Lindiwe expected the relief she’d been promised would arrive soon. But it’s been three years since then, and not much has changed.
This past year alone, the U.S. organization has raised over $30,000. But, since their launch there years ago, only $3000 has made it to Lindiwe’s orphanage, and this is after Lindiwe has had to keep calling, emailing, and begging to receive the funds owed to the local orphanage to cover basic necessities: food, medicine, school uniforms.
the organistaion that this article wants to make you aware of is
It basically allows african led organisations to dictatte and control their own funding, at least visit the website and support if you can. It means that these people won’t be left begging for the crumbs that the large western charities leave them (if they bother at all)
hey guys! remember KONY?
this white girl need to read this
dear followers who like women being awesome and women being friends with women and important familial relationships between women
go pick up Sword of Sorcery
Apparently it’s not doing very well, and that SUCKS!
The plot has been really great so far, with interesting political drama, excellent world building and a fantastic magical system. It also features a fair amount of cute shippy moments.
Funny how much easier it is to find awesome F/F ships when given a cast full of amazing female characters. hm
Did I mention that not everyone is white?
I know I’ve seen posts go by talking about how great it would be to have more female characters in comics, more women warriors in armor that’s not lingerie, and more woc represented across the board.
Well this is my recommendation on that front. It’s not perfect, but it’s so very good. The beowulf comic with it isn’t bad either, but eh Amethyst is awesome
YES. I just read this on a fluke, and it’s great. The prominent cast is largely female and you get awesome lady friendships, awesome mother/daughter stuff, and just overall awesomeness period. I’m honestly surprised that a title like this was greenlit by a major comic company in the first place, so I’m not surprised it’s not doing well. BUT IT SHOULD DO WELL BECAUSE IT’S QUALITY. Also I hadn’t even heard of it until recently? I’m not sure they gave it much press (it’s DC so :\). Also I totally ship Amaya and Ingvie. Seriously.
i remember reading this when i was a kid; kinda glad they brought it back.
Hello all! My name is Djenneba, I’m a new undergraduate transfer student at NYU studying International Relations and am in desperate need of a little help!
Here’s the issue: I’ve been lucky to be granted enough scholarship money to afford living on campus but not enough for the deposit required before moving in! How rude, no?
Currently, my scholarship money is sent directly to my school at NYU but none of the funds are allowed for use in making deposit payments. In order to live on campus for the Spring semester, I need to come up with a $1,000 housing deposit in order to take full advantage of the amazing opportunity I have been given. Here is where you wonderful people can hopefully step in to help: I have launched an Indiegogo campaign titled Get Djen Into NYU Housing! in order to make Spring semester housing a reality.
Confronted with the task of funding my education on my own, I’m sure you can imagine the many other expenses and bills I am currently dealing with. The $1,000 I am asking for help with will be a HUGE lifesaver in light of my many other fiscal responsibilities.
Please don’t make me have to live on the streets of New York in the dead of winter. It’s cold and people don’t look down before they spit. :(
ANYTHING you guys could contribute will help me GREATLY! And if you don’t have the means to (if anyone understands, it’s me!), then please help out by reblogging so as many can see this campaign as possible! The success of this campaign will be the greatest holiday wish I could ask for! Thank you so much!

signal boost signal boost signal booooooooost!
help my boo djen change the world, y’all!
With my school semester finally done, I finally have time to update on my situation.
In case people don’t know, I’m Savannah. Months ago, I was well known as “cruelyouth” on Tumblr before some jerk got my username.
Tumblr has helped me tremendously while I’ve been having very difficult financial times in the past few months, being fresh out of abuse.
This month in particular though, I would REALLY appreciate some help if people have anything to spare. I do work as a research assistant on campus, but my boss went in for surgery and wasn’t able to gather work for me. So basically, I am out of a job until next month. I really have very little means of support and have been barely scrapping by.
Right now, my funds are VERY low, so whatever help I can get would be GREATLY appreciated. I have bill collectors harassing me again, can’t really afford basic necessities, plus I can’t afford seeing a dentist even though I badly need to again :/. Can’t even afford the walk-in clinic. I’m still trying to fight with the state for food stamps and have been trying to find ways to get by, but this month is especially going to be hard for me.
It’s hard for everybody right now, and I understand that the holidays are coming up. But if you could spare a little, I would love you forever.
I also have some professional skills in writing, and I can proofread papers and stuff or help you do research. I’m sorry I really don’t have a sell-able talent. Well, I can snark, also, if you want me to snark about something. IDK.
Anyway, here is the donation link. There is also a link on my blog.
And if you can’t donate anything, that’s totally fine. But please signal boost this post. I don’t have a lot of followers now, so signal boosts would GREATLY help.
Thank you! <3
I will take that cinnamon challenge or whatever if people will reblog this and donate.
If I can get at least $100, I will eat a spoonful of cinnamon on camera.
This is a big deal because I hate cameras.
But I’ll do it.
If anyone gives you the whole “If you want shit to change in media become a director or writer and change it” bullshit
Show them this
Heres a little quote,
“In this day and age, it’s quite disappointing that so many shows failed to hire even a single woman or minority director during the course of an entire season — even shows whose cast and crew is notably diverse, Barclay noted. “And, ‘We just don’t know anybody’ doesn’t cut it anymore — the pool of talented and experienced women and minority directors grows every year, and too many of these qualified, capable directors are still overlooked.”
This is from the Directors Guild of America basically saying that there a DROVES AND DROVES of women, women of color, men of color all different types of brown people, WHO ARE TALENTED AND EXPERIENCED who do NOT get hired.
Don’t want to believe the LA Times? It’s right there. From the horses mouth.
So please. When people give you that
- Go make some media if you don’t feel represented
- There probably aren’t that many POC making media
- They want to find the best people and they just so happened to be white
TELL THEM TO READ THIS AND GO FUCK THEMSELVES.
This is my cousin Keyshawn Conway, he’s 14 and missing from home. He didn’t come back from school today and we’re all looking for him.
- Wears glasses
- Wearing dark orange shorts and a blue shirt (might be wearing a black jacket, he takes it everywhere)
- Has a black Skullcandy backpack outlined in lime green
- Has mild retardation, ADHD
We’ve already called the police (several times) and they won’t do ANYTHING because he’s a teen. They don’t consider him missing. They’ve labeled him a runaway. This child cannot last one night by himself. I’m trying not to panic but I’m scared that something’s wrong.
PLEASE if you’re in the Killeen-Ft. Hood area and see this child, call 911. He does not know his home phone number, does not know his address and does not have friends that he stays with. I’m begging those in my area to keep an eye out.
Please, PLEASE and thank you.
Missing child in Killeen-Ft. Hood, Texas.
Boost this, please.
Reblogging again because FUCK THE POLICE! Are you kidding me? This is a minor. A CHILD. If this was a white kid, you can bet your ass I’d be hearing about it all the way over here in Maryland. This makes me so angry.
I really hope this boy is found.
My sister just left a really terrible situation and is moving to NYC tomorrow to find a live-in nanny position. Here’s where you guys come in. While there are tons of great sites to find jobs on, there’s just nothing like word of mouth when you’re looking for a good family to work with or when a family is looking for a good nanny. So, if anyone knows anyone in NYC who is looking for a live-in, please message me and I can pass on info to my sister (whose name is Kat) or pass on her info to you.
Kat is young and active and VERY experienced. She was an assistant at a home daycare for many years. She was a part time nanny for two families, one with a difficult 4 year old and a younger boy, and one family with twins for whom she worked for about a year and a half. She was a full time live-in for a toddler boy in Washington until the breadwinner of the family lost his job and they could no longer afford to keep her on. She has excellent references, works best with very young kids (she LOVES babies and toddlers), and would be a happy addition to any family. AND SHE CAN COOK. I mean really well. She could make soup and it would be the best soup you’ve ever had. She is the only person I’ve ever seen get every kid she comes in contact with to eat a healthy meal and like it.
So, please, if you hear of any openings in NYC for live-ins, send them my way and I will send them on to her. Message me privately and I will happily give you her email address, phone number, and a link to her Care.com page.
The sooner she finds a position, the sooner I can have my room back. My cheap nyc bedroom is not nearly big enough for two people. So if you don’t know anyone, please signal boost!
