Vigilantes burn Roma camp in Marseille, France {BBC}

deafmuslimpunx:

golden-zephyr:

A group of vigilantes have evicted a group of Roma (Gypsies) from a Marseille housing estate and burnt down their camp, French media report.

There were no reports of violence when the 35 Roma people were forced out of the city’s Creneaux estate.

Furniture and other items were set on fire at the camp, which was erected on wasteland at the beginning of the week.

Residents had reportedly complained to their mayor, blaming the Roma for burglaries in the area.

Caroline Godard, a member of a Roma rights group called Rencontres Tsiganes, said she was “horrified” by news of the expulsion, Le Monde newspaper reports.

It appears that residents went to the authorities on Thursday morning, before the vigilantes took the law into their own hands.

Marseille has a recent history of tension between residents and Roma who have set up camps there, often just tents erected on patches of bare ground.

The 15th arrondissement of the southern port city, where the Creneaux estate is located, is one of its poorest districts, with a large immigrant population.

‘Fouling everything’

At 19:30 (17:30 GMT) on Thursday, a group of about 30 vigilantes ordered the Roma to leave.

By the time police arrived in Creneaux, they found the Roma leaving and no evidence of any violence, a source close to the inquiry told Le Monde.

Officers were only able to record the incident without reporting any crime, according to La Provence newspaper. However, images from the scene clearly show property being burnt.

Mayor Samia Ghali told AFP news agency that angry residents of Marseille’s 15th and 16th arrondissements had come to see her on Thursday morning, accusing the Roma of carrying out burglaries.

Some of the residents accused the Roma of “fouling everything and entering buildings”, she said.

One resident, whose name was given only as Sabrina, told La Provence that people had appealed to the authorities only to be told they had to wait several months before they would step in.

“We were given to understand that we had to sort out the matter ourselves,” she said.

“So fine, that’s what we did. In the afternoon we phoned each other and turned up at the camp. We all know each other here. It happened very fast.”

The new Socialist government has been breaking up illegal Roma camps and deporting their inhabitants back to Eastern Europe, resuming a controversial policy followed by the previous conservative government.

An estimated 15,000 foreign Roma were living in illegal camps across France this summer.

Coming mainly from Bulgaria and Romania, they have the right to enter France without a visa but, under special rules, they must have work or residency permits if they wish to stay longer than three months.

From January 2014, or seven years after the two countries’ accession to the EU, Romanians and Bulgarians will enjoy full freedom of movement anywhere in the EU.

Extremely disgusting.  Let’s not forget that hundreds of thousands of Roma people were massacred in the Holocaust. The Roma people is one of the most widely discriminated groups in Europe, and the hostility still continues to this day.

Dear White People (2012)

DEAR WHITE PEOPLE follows the stories of four black students at an Ivy League college where a riot breaks out over a popular “African American” themed party thrown by white students. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, the film will explore racial identity in “post-racial” America while weaving a universal story of forging one’s unique path in the world.

So here for this.

Omg.

[This is like the sixth draft of this. The first draft was the best, but when I tried to post it Tumblr was all like HAHA NO FUCK YOU, YOU DON’T GET TO SAY THINGS and I lost it. Lost drafts a few times because of site glitches. Anyway, here we go.]

I am white. I am really, really white. Most of my ancestors come from the British Isles; those who didn’t came from Germany and France and Norway, and were all also very white. I can get a sunburn in December with 85 SPF slathered fucking everywhere.

I don’t discuss race very often, because frankly I don’t think about it much. I don’t worry about whether or not I appear racist because I assume that my actions will speak for themselves. I don’t give a fuck about your ancestors. I don’t give a fuck about what you look like. All I care about is who you are; what you do and how you do it and what you say and how you say it. But since this is titled “Dear White People”, and I am white, I am forced to conclude that you are addressing me.

So, I’ll respond to all of your statements in order:

I currently have no close black friends. I happen to live in a place where whites and Hispanics greatly outnumber any other ethnicities, so I am statistically more likely to find white and Hispanic friends. As it turns out, my closest friends are white (one is half Jewish, so there’s a little diversity). This was not a conscious decision, merely how the dice landed. I have never specifically sought out someone black so I could make friends with them. Does that make me racist?

My weed comes from many sources, none of whom are black or named Tyrone. Why the automatic association with illegal activity?

I would never touch someone without their express, or at least implied, permission. People do that? What the fuck?

Anyone who claims that any kind of music makes them practically whatever is a moron and I do not appreciate being lumped in with morons.

The only kind of people who piss my family off are the kind who steal, rape, murder, or use drugs irresponsibly. If they got pissed off about me dating a black person, however, that would in no way delegitimize my relationship with that person, because I would never date someone for the sole purpose of pissing off someone else. That’s not dating, that’s using.

I will NEVER STOP DANCING. So fuck you.

Dear White People,

Anytime you jump into our spaces, defending you personal Whiteness and are like NOT ALL WHITE PEOPLE ARE LIKE THAT you are in fact exactly like those white people you feel you need to separate yourself from. In fact, you are worse than them because you feel the need to defend whiteness in a space where Black people are discussing their experiences! TDLR; This shit ain’t about you, cracker. Get over yourself and go dance your ass to the shame box.

Dear you,

You have no idea how hard it is for me not to just type “FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU” a thousand times. Cracker? Seriously? Why has this conversation disintegrated into racial slurs? To try to get back the calm, reasonable response:

I am not in any way trying to dimish or disrespect anyone’s experiences, or even this film. For one thing, I haven’t seen it. You’ll notice that everything I said was in response to the above GIFs. My point was not “Well, I’m not like that”, my point was “You’re stereotyping white people, which is also racist”. If I were to make a movie called “Dear Black People” about my experiences with racism, how well would that go over?

How about the scene where, on my first day at a new school, I’m assigned to sit next to a black person and that person stands up and says “Aw, hell no, I’m not sitting next to some privileged-ass white bitch” in response to absolutely nothing, because I’d said nothing and done nothing except be forced to stand at the front of the classroom and say my name and what school I’d gone to previously.

Or the scene where a friendless, shy little me in middle school has only one person to sit with at lunch, an absolutely awesome black girl named Shanna, but she ends up so harrassed for sitting with that “quiet little cracker” that I spend the rest of the year eating alone in the bathrooms.

Or the scene where I’m half in love with the most amazing guy, again, black, and as soon as I try to do something about it one of his friends stops me because apparently he doesn’t date white girls. I’m crushed, because he’s always so nice and charming and kind and I really thought there was something, but I let it go. Later I find out the friend stopped me because she didn’t want him to date a white girl, and I’m crushed all over again.

My point is that this GIF (and in fact probably the film) is addressing the subject in a bigoted and hurtful way. I am more than happy to watch a film, even promote and laud a film, that addresses the racism that I am entirely aware that black people face daily. I am more than willing to hear about everyone’s experiences, and I know that a lot of white people are ignorant, condescending bigots and they absolutely deserve a smackdown like this, but they deserve individual smackdowns. You can’t address a smackdown to an entire race of people. By calling this “Dear White People”, you’re including all white people in that statement and not accounting for the people of other ethnicities who are equally racist against blacks, and statements like “stop dancing” are simply playing to a stupid stereotype. Bigotry is not exclusively white, and shit like this deserves a response.

Somebody come get your cousin & explain reality to them. Or get her to shut the fuck up & stop derailing this conversation with her trite bullshit. I already got Bingo & she’s boring the shit out of me.

Tosh.0 steals intellectual property from Adipositivity.com

shewhorollswithrolls:

I’m horrified and disgusted by Comedy Central and Tosh.0 in a way that I can’t even voice- they have stolen an image from the Adipositivity Project, a website whose aim is to promote size acceptance and body positivity, and are using it to fan the flames of bigotry and hatred. I’m copying a blog post below from James Carter, which includes information on how to contact Comedy Central and ask that the image be removed, lest they incur legal action (action which is already underway, I might add).

I urge you to write to Comedy Central and add your voice to stop this hatred:

fat shaming and stealing: tosh.0 style

I want to let you know about Daniel Tosh’s theft of Substantia Jones‘ photograph that features my friend Janie Martinez. If you need to see the vitriol currently being spewed out onto it at the Tosh.0 website, go here.

Over and over, fat people are the butt of jokes, and it must stop. To add insult to injury, Comedy Central and Tosh.0 are using Substantia’s photo illegally. Substantia is a professional photographer who features professional models and every day folk celebrating their beauty and life.

To have Mr. Tosh or anyone steal these photographs for the explicit use of mean, snarky jibes continues a cycle of bullying culture. We wonder why people, especially women, have body image issues, yet the fat shaming entertainment industry encourages this belittling of people. It perpetuates a myth that one cannot be beautiful at any size, and it encourages trolls and bullies to believe what they write is actually funny. It’s not. It’s angry, spiteful and hurtful.

You can do something about this illegal, immoral activity. Please contact comedy central to protest Daniel Tosh’s theft of intellectual property:

Phone: (212) 767-8600
Fax: (212) 767-8592
Email:mail@comedycentral.com

It may not seem like a big deal in this day and age where we right click on photos and share them like toys in a sandbox, but Comedy Central and Daniel Tosh make money off stolen images like this. Reach out, stand up for artists, and help renounce sizeism.

lebanesepoppyseed

Dear Tumblr People of Color,

lebanesepoppyseed:

Specifically Black and Latino folk-Without any white people interjecting or saying stupid baseless shit about how “SEE POC ARE JUST AS OPPRESSIVE/LOL THEY CAN’T GET IT TOGETHER”, in fact without any white people at all, we need to have the whole personal accountability conversation among ourselves for ourselves.

My “From-The-Fuckin’-Streets-of-New-York-City-Former-Cheesy-B-Boy-Then-Club-Kid-Proud-To-Be-Taino-Fuck-The-Cops-I-Hate-White-People” Puerto Rican boss was telling me about how despite growing up in the streets and in the culture and being first generation Latino, he had to grow up and “leave the streets behind”. He grew to see the wrong in the misogyny and the homophobia and get above it. He told me about how his wife got him to stop using the N word because despite his history and cache with the word, should he be using it?

Are we really entitled to problematic shit because of internalizing or because of the totally real and legit cache certain language or mentalities have in our communities?

The alternative is kind of lacking. Obviously, shit is more complex than “Don’t Say Those Words” or “Automatically Saying Those Words Mean You Are This Bigoted”. Also, many white people are more than ridiculous and use the language and way that Latino and Black people communicate among themselves as means for dismissal or derailing, or to excuse their white savior bullshit.

But again, goddamn white people aside, we need to have that accountability conversation for ourselves. Do we want to keep on with using gayness and womanliness as an insult? It isn’t about whiteness, it is about us. I don’t give a fuck about white women, I care about the fact that me and mine have been hurt by this language, by this mentality. I was always the bitch, always shut up as the black bitch. I removed the word from my vocabulary, then slowly, because you know, “reclaiming” and “Latina and black women have a right to use it” stuff, I slowly started with selective usage of the word, but it still just doesn’t sit well with me. I don’t automatically dismiss female rappers that use terms like “hoe, bitch, cunt”, and can even really love or appreciate the way they are using the term, etc, but I’m not exactly screaming from the mountain tops over the inclusion of it. “Slut” is never OK with me, at all.

We need to navigate this shit and have a real conversation about it. For real.

Christian Pastor and Deacons Attack Gay Couple To Keep Them From Church

bringtheruckuss:

A gay Tennessee couple was reportedly attacked — physically and verbally assaulted — by a Christian Pastor and his deacons to prevent the same-sex couple from entering the Pastor’s church. Sadly, the pastor is the father of one of the two members of the gay couple. Also sadly, the church members and bystanders did not lift a finger to help the couple or to stop church leaders from perpetrating the crime. Further, initially, local authorities refused to allow the couple to file charges.
