No bitch. You’re not going to gaslight me and tell me my emotions aren’t real.
You are not going to shut me down.
Fuck you and your “we’re all human” bullshit.
Cuz you a shitty ass human.
We all human, but you insist on using language and images that are historically known to DEHUMANIZE me
We all human, but you makin fun of certain human beings being killed on a regular basis simply for existing.
We all human, but your ass don’t respect my fucking human boundaries.
We all human, but some are more human than others.
And the minute I point that shit out, mothafuckers wanna call me a ‘soshul juztiz blog’ and stalk my fucking page. So called human beings come on fucking anon, calling me all sorts of shit, putting my page on places like 4chan and reddit to try and intimidate me into shutting up about the shit that the “WE’RE ALL HUMAN” crowd does on a regular fucking basis.
Fuck your stalking asses.
Fuck your ‘We’re all human’ bullshit.
Fuck your ‘oversensitive’ shit.
“What is really being sold in a pornographic film? It’s a conception of sexuality that Dworkin identified— it is not just sex on film. It is sex presented in the context of domination and subordination. Pornography does not just eroticize or sexualize male domination over women. It eroticizes racism. It eroticizes every power dynamic that you can imagine. Think of any power dynamic that you know where there is a hierarchy. I can guarantee you that there is a pornographic film that eroticizes that dynamic.”
male/female, white/poc, employer/employee, parent/child, etc…it is a sick sick industry.
i haven’t seen any sex-positive feminists defending racism as a valid “kink” yet (funny), but there’s still time.
edit: i HAVE NOW. nazi kink, for real.
and i read a good argument for the concept of “full-time” “slavery/ownership” in BDSM being inherently racist.
I have problems with Robert Jensen and they way he essentially speaks over those who are actively trying to change the status quo in porn. Are these problems in mainstream inherent? Damn right. But to go “and that’s why ALL PORN IS BAD,” completely overshadowing the number of people who are trying to make their money and be ethical about it is some bullshit. You cannot put Jiz Lee on the same level as something from Bang Bros. You just CAN’T.
[HUGE TRIGGER WARNINGS, ESPECIALLY FOR TRANSMISOGYNY, CISSEXISM, RACISM, CRIMINALIZATION… PLEASE SEE MY TAGS]
*Prepares self for a long discussion*. Robert Jensen and I have had many lovely— and by “lovely” I am completely sarcastic and I mean “horrendous”— interactions when I attended a day long discussion/presentation of his.
He knows who I am personally and explicitly dislikes me, which is wonderful, because that means I succeeded in calling his shit out, over and over.
There are many legitimate arguments to make about the horrendous racism, sexism, cissexism, etc, in mainstream porn. (I’ll save my arguments for why the eroticizing of power dynamics by and for those oppressed by those power dynamics can be cathartic and positive for a different time.) Regardless of one’s views, I strongly recommend not quoting Robert Jensen to make any arguments.
Three of MANY reasons not to promote Robert Jensen in any form:
1. He is massively transmisogynistic and cissexist. One example is when he verbally attacked and misgendered a trans* woman who was, at the time, also an anti-pornography scholar. (She has since changed her views, but more importantly, this is her description of his transmisogyny in interacting with her.) In a public gathering, when confronted by myself and my friends (having read her post), Jensen OPENLY misgendered trans* women as a whole, tried to COMPLAIN ABOUT HER TO US, and tried to argue that trans* people are upholding patriarchy and gender oppression BY IDENTIFYING AS TRANS*.
2. He promotes the criminalization of sex work of ALL FORMS, in ways that have been explicitly stated by sex workers (especially sex workers of color who are already targeted by police) to TANGIBLY INCREASE THE RISK OF HARM AND DEATH IN THEIR LIVES. (i.e. Although Jensen does not promote imprisonment of sex workers themselves, he promotes criminal punishments for johns and those who purchase sex, which sex workers articulate causes the industry to slip farther underground, with riskier, more violent clients the ones most likely to stick around.)
3. Robert Jensen is a rich, white, cis man who claims to know what is best for women, and/or people of color, and/or sex workers. When they disagree, he explicitly says they have a “false consciousness” and are being brainwashed. He literally said this in response to one of my discussion questions about what actual sex workers of color are saying they need. As defined by people who experience these oppressions, Jensen is sexist, racist, transmisogynistic, cissexist, and just plain harmful.
Bonus: Despite claiming to be anti-capitalist, he gets paid top dollar (I promise you, I saw the numbers… a lot of money) to talk about the oppression of women of color without including the perspectives women of color in his talks!
I could go on for hours, but I think that’s enough for now. Jensen’s role model, Andrea Dworkin, was unbelievably racist and cissexist, too, and Robert Jensen is worse.
I recommend Emi Koyama, “a multi-issue social justice activist and writer synthesizing feminist, Asian, survivor, dyke, queer, sex worker, intersex, genderqueer, and crip politics,” for a nuanced, non-criminalizing analysis of the sex industry and intersectional oppressions within it. Her writing on this topic is available on her linked website.
(Edited to add: Forgot to mention, my own personal experience is that I literally had only sat down and introduced myself a minute before when Jensen 1) misgendered me, and 2) started commenting in detail about my physical appearance. This is someone who makes a living talking about objectification.)
Oh, I remember how he tried to shut you down when he came to our school. He was on some severe bullshit.(via sourcedumal)
Probably about to get unfriended. :)
Actually, if we’re gonna play that game, media is “set up” to make females the most appealing thing to focus on period. Meaning almost everything is designed to cater to them.
You want pussy?
Gotta have a good whip, money, right clothes.
Want to get that stripper?
Gotta have dollars!
You want that new porno with your hottest new pornstar female in it? Gotta buy it. (Unless you find it for free on the internet.)
Point is, the guy has a point. We have all kind of shit, but women are quick to talk down on us about it, but turn around and get something similar and it is the bees knees to society. Fifty shades of grey is like pure smut and there’s nothing wrong with that, but women love it. However, men get criticized a lot just for having a library of porn on their computer.
Furthermore, women get to EXPLOIT a lot in which the focus is being used upon them. Strippers get mad money, women get to call shots of what a man must do before they get in her panties and etc, etc, etc. So lets not sit here and act like just because most of media is designed to appeal to male sexuality that women aren’t getting the better end of the stick out of this.
Most men are thirsty fucks and they’ll empty their pockets if a women tells them “you gotta have a JOB, if you wanna be with me.”
p.s. - Most fine women don’t even have to really get undressed for men to still be all over them anyways, so hey.
Whoa… Back the FUCK up for a second.
women get to call shots of what a man must do before they get in her panties and etc, etc,
This is seriously an “issue” for you? You think that’s *UNFAIR*.
Fucking everyone in the final fucking say in what, who and when someone “gets in their panties”. Their fucking bodies belong to THEM not you.
Your entire response sounds like nothing more than crying like an entitled child at best, and at worst like a creepy fucking douche who thinks that people’s bodies don’t belong to them.
I’ma need my cissexism hat for a minute, because clearly cis het men need to be addressed right now.
y’all reading this shit?
“women call the shots into who gets into their panties”
You GOTDAMN RIGHT. They are my muthafuckin panties. I don’t care if all you wanna do is wear them, they are mine, and so is the fucking vagina (lol no; vulva) inside them. Why in the fuck should I let some dude smash, whether he’s paying for dinner or not, if I don’t fucking feel like it? Why? A wallet is not a gateway to pussy, son.
And frankly, I don’t give a fuck if you’re in a mansion in Beverly Hills or if you’re in the projects, if I don’t want to give it, you ain’t gettin it. It’s that simple.
Strippers get mad money because men want to see them naked. That’s not exploitation of men, that’s exploitation of strippers. Talmbout we “get to” exploit that. And why the fuck should a woman not get paid for something men are trying to do anyway? That’s a job, dude. That’s putting food on the table. That’s paying student loans. That’s paying rent for a lot of folks who can’t get in the door in other jobs, and that’s a lot more people than you’d think. Frankly, after centuries of being exploited, you damn right we want something to do with how, when, and why our bodies are viewed by anyone.
Fifty Shades is a piece of shit. I could have sat on a damn keyboard and ended up with better writing. I can’t honestly answer why anyone loves it, except that thinking is hard for people while reading smut, maybe? I don’t knoooow. It’s inane. Men get criticized for having porn because people think women shouldn’t be exposing their bodies. Somehow that’s nasty. Most of the talking about men having porn is jokingly, and when it’s not, it’s because the person thinks/was taught or told that porn is gross, not the dude watching it.
“Most fine women don’t have to…” Looka here. What makes you think those women even want men all over them all the fucking time? Did it occur to you how exhausting it must be for someone to walk around having to field off dudes who don’t even see them as people, only as some pretty, shiny, brand new “strange” with a vagina (assuming she even has one)? How fucked are you in the head to feel like that’s a good thing? I’m not there now, but I had several (more than 10) years of that, and thank everything that is holy that not considered someone’s “model chick” (and what the fuck is that) right now, because these days I’d have beat the shit out of someone for smacking my ass, or grabbing my arm talmbout “lemme holla atchu” one more gotdamn time. But y’all don’t think of that, all y’all think about is “why don’t they want me?” and “they must only be attracted to money!” Nah, son. Fuck outta here with that.
Media is set up to make women (not “females,” women) the most attractive thing because that is what men think other men want. That is because that is what those men want. Other men are telling you who’s hot and who’s not, and how the fuck is that anything to do with women? Please somebody answer that one. The majority of it is produced by men, for men, in order to appeal to men. Men, men, men, men, men, men, men.
Oh god, won’t somebody think of these thirsty-ass men!?
We’re not “normal.”
And it’s pretty cissexist and dehumanizing of you to call yourself “normal” in comparison to “trans*.”
The objective, correct word you’re looking for is “cis.”
I know that, in your unchecked cissexist, transphobic mind, calling yourself “normal” in comparison to “trans*” might make you feel better about yourself and might make you feel more comfortable.
But it’s mindsets like yours that contributes to the oppression and violence trans* people face on a regular basis.
Really, sit and think about what you’re doing here.
Do you notice how horrible you sound?
If so, good.
If not, come here, and I’ll gladly collect you.
a slide from my presentation on gender for psychology
This is so awesome!
”sex is your biological gender.” NO
I know I’ve already written about this on here a million times but i fucking HATE these charts.
this is a nope
read delisub’s commentary. it’s spot on.
trans 101 really needs to pull away from separating sex and gender. there is no ‘biological gender’ and sex is a socially constructed category just as much as gender is. and just. “you can be male, female, or intersex”. how about no. i am none of the above, THANKS. it’s not up to you or anyone else to tell someone what their body is. not to mention, not all intersex people identify as “neither male nor female”.
and this language—“gender is the role you want to play in society” is SO FUCKED UP. gender identity =/= gender roles. gender expression =/= social perception of your gender. gender identity isn’t (necessarily) something you “want” it’s something you ARE. gender can be play for some people but it isn’t that way for everyone. to imply otherwise is trivializing and erasing others’ experiences.
ughhh i am just so tired of people trying to teach gender theory when they don’t even slightly understand it. sorry OP but this is cissexist, inaccurate, and harmful information you are spreading. ugh, just look at the amount of notes this has.
oh AND BTW if you reblog this from me, and you remove all the commentary WRITTEN BY TRANS PEOPLE ABOUT HOW THIS ISN’T REFLECTIVE OF THEIR EXPERIENCES, i hope you realize that you’re a cissexist fucking piece of shit. seriously.
More recommended commentary!
p.p.s. can we talk about the fact that the image used for this is such a fucking ~carefree gender-normative white girl~
like honestly, i could at least get kinda down with the genderbread thing cause, you know, food. But really?
I am not a woman trapped in a man’s body. This body is no man’s; it is mine, it is me, and there is no man in that equation. And I am not trapped in it. There are a million and one ways out of this body, and I have clung to it, tooth and claw, despite an endless line of people and institutions who would rather I vacate the premises, and have sometimes been willing to make me bleed to convince me they’re right.
This body is mine, and I claim it and its bruises, and it is not a man’s, and I am not trapped here. I have looked leaving my body in the eye and I have said, in the end, hell no. There is too much to do, too much to love, too many who need one more of us to say hell no and help them say the same.”
little light, the seam of skin and scales (Taking Steps)
I just love this woman’s writing so much. Her blog was one of my first references when I started really thinking and educating myself about trans issues, and she has definitely influenced my thinking in a lot of ways. Personally, I think that anyone who is seriously invested in fighting transmisogyny and being a real ally to trans women should go read everything little light has ever written.
This. Little Light writes kickass, powerful and true words.
just to address some of the responses I’ve been getting…
calling feminism oppressive =/= calling all feminists oppressive.
but I shouldn’t even have to make that distinction any more than I should follow up every mention of male privilege with “But I know not all men are like that.”
I know about bell hooks, for fuck’s sake.
call it generalizing if you want but the truth remains that mainstream western feminism is rife with the problems I named. if you don’t see it, look closer.
this is about an entire movement. when oppression happens in the name of feminism it’s not about individuals fucking up (but that happens A LOT, too). it goes beyond that, to deeper, systemic issues within feminism.
this is not the same as misogynist anti-feminism or someone just “not getting” how patriarchy works. this is not the same as cultural stereotyping of feminists. this is not coming from an outsider. i identified as a feminist for the past 15 years of my life. i have PLENTY of experience to fall back on as well as facts we call “history”.
if you deny the well-documented oppressive history *and present* of feminism, you’re part of the problem.
if you deny the validity of my (and others’) lived experiences, you’re part of the problem.
and academia should not be your go-to resource on what’s going on in modern day feminism. academia is massively distanced from the rest of the world. hence, “ivory tower”. it’s also kind of hilarious to be told by someone that “well I have a master’s degree in women’s studies and I don’t see any of this”. “Women’s studies” itself is a fucked up term to use and I’ve heard countless stories of the obscenely racist, cissexist and ableist bullshit being taught in various schools under the title “women’s studies” so there’s a good chance you’re not seeing it because you’re just not looking.
but I digress. here are some of the things I’m referring to when I say mainstream western feminism (a lot of these are US-centric but still applicable to broader western feminism):
-attachment to “women’s studies”
-the national organization for women
-the way feminists (including higher-ups in NOW) publicly and loudly attacked Black women for supporting Obama over Clinton
-the idea that all women are united in ANY way
-the idea of a shared ‘female experience’
-“Muslim women are oppressed”
-“rap music is misogynist”
-the vagina monologues
-the pro-choice movement’s stubborn and consistent use of cissexist language
-Ms. and Bust magazines (Bitch much less so because it’s pretty ‘underground’ and third wave, but it still has major problems)
-the loudest feminist voices in the media like Jessica Valenti and Amanda Marcotte and the fact that they get the credit for repeating shit women of color said before them
-the fact that the date that is widely accepted and celebrated as the day when “women won the right to vote” is actually only applicable to white women
-the fact that the most frequently cited feminist statistics are about white & cis women
THE PAST (except not really because a lot of this still happens)
-the exclusion of women of color (intentionally so; many feminists hated Black women and were QUITE vocal about it and this trend continues today in more subtle ways)
-the exclusion and oppression of trans women by second wavers and radfems (which still continues today IE: Michigan Women’s fest) such as Gloria Steinem, Andrea Dworkin, and Mary Daly
-eugenics. For example: Margaret Sanger (the founder of Planned Parenthood) openly expressed a desire to prevent people with disabilities from procreating
there is a LOT more information out there if you’re actually interested in understanding what I’m talking about.
some of you need to take a good, long, hard look at the arguments you’re making cuz they reek of privilege denial.
Definitely agree with all of the critiques here. I’m doing a degree in gender studies right now, but it’s nothing like the US academy courses — one day I’ll actually write what I’m doing here, meanwhile gathering spoons to just survive the best I can. You don’t have to solely be in the US to understand how mainstream white feminism has become the face of feminism globally — in a manner of speaking — this exasperation with feminism is an old friend of mine.
The only point of divergence I have with OP is the way we’ve both responded to the many —isms within feminism — I’m not going to give up just yet. Yes, I do have my moments of exhaustion where I want to just give up the label altogether. However (so far) I’ve been able to manage with taking breaks or disengaging wherever necessary, not sure if this is healthy at all either.
But the main reason I stay in the movement (besides that I can and haven’t reached my breaking point yet) is that voices like mine are so frequently erased or just silenced, right up. So I am a reminder that me and mine are not silent or wordless. I am the reminder that your movement isn’t as progressive as you think it to be. I won’t quit feminism because these —isms exist, rather work toward making feminists fuck up less.
Of course, tomorrow I may feel differently — and completely understand how OP got to where they did, just wanted to clarify that for me that isn’t an option as of now.
[TW FOR ANTI-TRANS AND RACIST VIOLENCE AND HATE SPEECH]
SUPPORT CECE MCDONALD!
CeCe McDonald is a young African American transgender woman charged with “second degree murder” after an incident that began when she was violently attacked because of her gender and race.
DROP the charges and FREE CeCe!
CeCe is a creative and energetic person who, before her life was so unjustly interrupted, was studying fashion at MCTC. She had a stable home where she lived with and helped support four other African American youth, her family. CeCe’s family describes her as a leader, a role model, and a loyal friend. She is known as a wise, out-spoken, and welcoming person, with a cheerful disposition and a history of handling prejudice with amazing grace.
Around 12:30 am on June 5, CeCe and four of her friends (all of them black) were on their way to Cub Foods to get some food. As they walked past Schooner’s Bar in South Minneapolis, a man and two women (all of them white) began to yell epithets at them. They called CeCe and her friends ‘faggots,’ ‘niggers,’ and ‘chicks with dicks,’ amongst other things.
As they were shouting, one of the women smashed her drink into the side of CeCe’s face, slicing her cheek open, lacerating her salivary gland, and stinging her eyes with liquor. A fight ensued, with more people joining in. What happened during the fight is unclear, but within a few minutes Dean Schmitz–one of the attackers–had been stabbed.
CeCe was later arrested, and is now falsely accused of murder
For a month, CeCe was kept in solitary confinement “for her own protection”; she had no say in this matter. Finally, she was transferred to a psychiatric unit in the Public Safety Facility. It was nearly two months before she was taken back to a doctor to check up on the wound on her face, which by then had turned into a painful, golf ball-sized lump.
Later on, CeCe’s friends were harassed on the street by people they recognized from the scene of the fight. Individuals circled the block that CeCe’s friends were walking on and called them ‘niggers’ and ‘faggots’ and told them to ‘go back to Africa.’ When they attempted to wave down a passing squad car for assistance, the officer driving the car said he would not help them.
Help us fight for CeCe, and for an end to racist, transphobic violence in our communities! Visit our What You Can Do page and find out how to get involved.
