Almost every marginalized group that cites evidence of violence, especially police violence and abuse, is actually citing statistics against African-American members of that group.

girljanitor:

1. Police assault a gay man. It is reported and framed as an “anti-gay” attack. White gay people say “look at the terrible violence we face!”

He is a black man.

image

2. Feminists decry the horrific new developments in regard to the criminalization of pregnancy, i.e. people with uteri who are prosecuted and/or sent to prison for refusing a c-section, having a miscarriage or stillbirth, having a mental illness, being perceived as “irresponsible”, et cetera.

White women: “this is happening to women!!!” News stories invariably show the pregnant bellies of white women. The stories are written by white women, and are addressed to white women. Which is also cissexist.

This is happening to Black and Native American women like Regina McKnight and Martha Greywind:

First, we describe characteristics of the women and the cases, finding that low-income women and women of color, especially African American women, are overrepresented among those who have been arrested or subjected to equivalent deprivations of liberty.

who are poor, and often living in the South, with its rich history of forced sterilizations and eugenics. South Carolina especially showed preference for sterilizing African American women.

From the report:

For example, in South Carolina thirty-four of ninety-three cases came from the contiguous counties of Charleston and Berkeley.

3. A white Autistic person writes the line, “Being mentally ill means that I am more likely to be shot by police”, and explains why hiding a mental illness can be a survival tool.

Unfortunately, here in reality, those Autistic people who are shot to death by police can’t hide the immediate, visual fact that they are Black men.

4. The face of LGBT activism is white gay men writing about police violence toward white gay people. Pepper spray at a Pride Parade is big news. In fact, many articles defend a white gay man who assaulted a Black woman and told her to “go back to Africa”. White gay men love to write about how subject to violence they are.

The problem with that is, almost all of the violent crimes including murders are against gay people of color

and almost all of those (44 percent of overall) are against the “t” in LGBT

and nearly all of those crimes are against Trans* women of color

And those women are quite likely to be prosecuted, harassed, and/or arrested/assaulted by police when they are the VICTIMS of a violent crime.

Also, trans* women of color are sent to prison for surviving a vicious attack. After a trial in which evidence of the attacker’s racism, swastika tattoos, and criminal history is suppressed.

5. Disability advocacy organization in Washington decries disabled children being criminalized, arrested, and prosecuted for minor or nonexistent infractions. News sites report that Mississippi School-To-Prison Pipeline “targets African American AND disabled children”, and uses this image:

image

When in fact, ALL of the children targeted were children of color:

all of them “children of color,” says Jody Owens, with the Southern Poverty Law Center–were routinely arrested at Meridian schools allegedly on the say-so of teachers or administrators, handcuffed and taken to jail where they were held for days on end without benefit of a hearing, a lawyer, or understanding their Miranda rights.

Meridian county is 55% African-American, and about 70% of schoolchildren are African American.

Disabled children of color face torture, imprisonment, vicious beatings perpetrated by teachers, and are African American children with or without disabilities are 3 1/2 times more likely to receive “disciplinary action” against them in school than white students.

6. There is a huge outcry against the NRA’s suggestion of armed guards at Elementary schools in the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting.

A bare footnote or completely lost in this outcry is the fact that an overwhelming proportion of children of color, especially Black and Latino children, already go to schools with armed guards and police presence on the campus.

The notorious and unapologetic racist sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, Joe Arpaio, has sent out more than 3,000 untrained “posse” volunteers to “police” schools under his purview. This is when his “trained” deputies already torture, abuse, beat, and murder people of color in Maricopa County on a terrifyingly regular basis.

The problem is, if you are a Black student, the campus police may be quite likely to shoot you dead.

To come full circle, the student shot dead by police in the link above also had a mental illness.

Almost every marginalized group that cites evidence of overwhelming discrimination and violence, especially police violence and abuse, is actually citing statistics against African-American members of that group.

The point of all this is that journalism repeatedly fails to accurately report that people of color suffer the overwhelming majority of police violence. The racism built into the very foundations of American society and culture ensures that this violence continues, is under-reported, misrepresented as evidence of criminality, when it fact it is evidence of the criminalization of people of color, especially Black Americans.

If you are a white person, and you experience a particular axis of marginalization and want to give statistics on the violence you face as an oppressed person, especially in regards to police violence, you should consider checking whether these statistics accurately reflect the violence against white members of the marginalized group you belong to.

And also of note: police violence is the measure of which overtly sanctioned violence perpetrated by U.S. government and society is glaring gateway into overall violence and discrimination is perpetrated again people of color, especially Black Americans. It permeates the education system, the medical and mental health systems, the social security and welfare systems, the legal system, the higher education systems, the banking systems, the commercial and entrepreneurial systems, and every single institution.

and sociopathic asshats like Lisa Wade who feel the PRESSING FEMINIST ISSUE is sticking up for mothers who murder their disabled children

image

NOT DISABLED WOMEN, WHO IF THEY MAKE IT TO ADULTHOOD WITHOUT BEING MURDERED, ENDURE A RATE OF VIOLENCE, RAPE, AND ABUSE THAT IS FUCKING UNREAL.

70%-83% of developmentally disabled women have been, are, or will be raped.

Countless women with disabilities have been, are or will be forcibly sterilized in order to conceal evidence of their current or future rape. INCLUDING SMALL CHILDREN.

Countless women with disabilities are pressured to abort their pregnancies or given misinformation about their ability to have children.

Countless women have been denied basic accessibility tools in order to report their abuse or rape.

Women with disabilities who live in institutions are up to ten times more likely to be abused than women without disabilities.

Shit like this is why Linda Cornelison, a 19-year old woman, was tortured to death by medical staff at the Judge Rotenburg Center, receiving more than 57 applications of “aversives” in the last four hours preceding her death from a perforated ulcer,  such as bruising muscle pinches and ammonia pellets broken directly under her nose. NO ONE WAS HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR HER DEATH.

This misplaced “sympathy” is why children like 3-year-old Amelia Rivera are denied lifesaving organ transplants and doctors fell comfortable telling their parents their lives aren’t worth saving.

“FEMINISTS” LIKE THESE ARE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT SYMPATHY FOR WENDY GARLAND’S MURDERERS THAN HER. More concerned about the two women who let her die covered in her own filth in a room over 100 degrees, where she lay bedridden and without medical attention for more than two years.

The media is more concerned about DOMESTIC ABUSER’S STRESS LEVEL then the fact that they’re BEATING THE SHIT OUT OF THEIR WIVES.

When 87% of women with severe disabilities are beaten by their partners, they are told they should “just leave”.

When young disabled women are burned to death by their mother, Lisa Wade asks, but what about that poor murderer???

And THE FUCKING MEDIA LOVES stories like this one that tell a sympathetic tale of a “poor mother” who drowned her disabled 4-year-old daughter in the bathtub, who has been released and plans to have more children, and has been ruled “not a threat” to children.

Laura Cummings, raped and tortured to death by her mother and other family members, and Lisa Wade would like us to sympathize with these “poor mothers”.

Zahra Baker, a disabled 10-year-old girl, was raped, murdered, dismembered and fed to wild animals, and Elisa Baker, her stepmother, was sentenced to 15-18 years for second degree murder…SHE FACES MORE TIME ON UNRELATED DRUG CHARGES THAN SHE DOES FOR THE MURDER. Her father received a 30-day suspended sentence for unrelated misdemeanors.

Betty Ann Gagnon, 48, lived most of her life on her own until she was beaten to death by her family after spending the previous FIVE YEARS IN A CHICKEN WIRE CAGE AND TENT SMEARED WITH HER OWN FECES. HER FAMILY WAS *NOT* CHARGED WITH MURDER.

THESE ARE NOT ISOLATED EVENTS.

THIS IS SYSTEMATIC VIOLENCE IN A WORLD THAT TELLS PEOPLE IT’S A-OK TO TORTURE, RAPE, AND MURDER DISABLED WOMEN AND ACTIVELY FACILITATES THEIR ABUSE, RAPE, AND MURDER.

“FEMINISTS” WHO DON’T UNDERSTAND THAT PRO-CHOICE WORKS BOTH WAYS

WHERE OPENLY EUGENICIST “FEMINISTS” LIKE THESE ARE HAPPY TO TELL ME I SHOULD NEVER HAVE EXISTED BECAUSE I’M A BURDEN TO WOMEN WHO “COUNT” AS WOMEN.

I AM SILENCED AND SPOKEN OVER

WHY WOULD I SUPPORT A MOVEMENT THAT WOULD BE GLAD TO SEE ME DEAD?

Okay, I don’t usually comment on these things (and how who the fuck reads this tumblr anyways?), but I will put this out there: expressing sympathy for someone who is in an incredibly difficult situation is not being a “sociopathic asshat”. Did Wade ever advocate murdering mentally or otherwise disabled children? Did she exonerate real (or even fictional) mothers who killed or abused their children? No. Did she “urge us to sympathize” with ‘poor mothers’ such as Laura Cummings’ parents? Show me where she said that, because I sure can’t find it. Did she acknowledge that the system is stacked against these kids and their parents alike, and the fact that being a caregiver on top of a parent can be an incredibly difficult and even intensely negative experience that can make people confront the fact that, sometimes, in these types of bad situations, a part of them wants things that are pretty horrible? Yes. And I will be the first to agree that the way the world treats disabled women is absolute shit, shameful and dehumanizing and all of the awful things you link to are too true, and happen again and again. But you know what’s not going to help rally people behind preventing this shit? Jumping on a random woman who wrote an article - in which, by the way, the most damning thing that she said on the subject was that she “wondered if [the mother who posted the PostSecret] was feeling… simultaneously exhausted and filled with guilt” - and declaring that she’s just like people who kill, rape, neglect, mutilate, and torture their children. Or declaring that women who admit they would struggle with the question of whether or not they would be able to raise a disabled child, or even questioning whether congenital disabilities like athsma, heart disease, etc. should be filed under the question of ‘diversity’, are somehow “OPENLY EUGENIST”. (Leaving aside the fact that disabled children of mothers who are unable or unwilling to care for them are logically the most likely to be abused and/or neglected, and so the pro-choice question isn’t a just matter of GOOD MOM vs. EVIL HUMAN BEING.) And maybe I just speak for myself here, but were I a parent of a child wish disabilities, or pregnant and confronting the question of whether or not to screen for disabilities, and what to do if the results came back positive, my response to this sort of vitriolic policing wouldn’t be, “Well, maybe she’s right. Maybe I should never feel overwhelmed or guilty or even occasionally resentful, and to express those feelings (even if I never act on them), or sympathize with people who express those feelings, or hell, even POINT OUT THAT THESE FEELINGS COULD EXIST, makes me evil and worthy of scorn, righteous rage, and hatred.” Quite frankly, my response would be (and is), “I’m a feminist and yeah, amazingly enough, I don’t want your overreacting and your policing.”

The thing is, you’re a minority and want to change the world so that it treats you better? You’re going to need allies, and speaking as one of them, this is not the way to do it. Being an abled ally, any kind of ally, isn’t about being 100% perfect, or even 80%, ain’t about agreeing with people who swear at you and insult you for being ignorant, or expressing a different opinion than yours, because the world has treated them like crap and the rage feels good burning in their chests and shouting from their computer screen. It’s getting people together, abled and disabled, and saying: Hey. This woman called Lisa Wade wrote this article about how mothers of disabled kids can get to feeling really isolated, overwhelmed, and depressed because proper resources are not available to them, money can get even tighter than it would with an abled kid, and they’re expected to be lawyers and doctors and social workers and a million other things besides mothers just to get them to see the right doctor, or get them into the right school, not to mention expected to never feel resentful about any of this. Meanwhile, these kids are getting murdered and abused in huge numbers, partly because of the same lack of resources, oversight, and support (financial, logistical, educational, medical, emotional) that’s fucking over their caregivers. And maybe Lisa Wade is doesn’t consider it from the kid’s perspective, or overtly call out this system as being horrifically linked to institutionalized abuse and oppression, but even she seems to pick up on the fact that it’s pretty damn screwed up. How can I help change it, and how can I get other people to help, too?

WHERE DID SHE SYMPATHIZE???

RIGHT HERE, WHEN SHE POSTED THIS:

image

AND CALLED FOR TRYING TO UNDERSTAND THE MOTHER AND HER FUCKING FEELINGS

ANYONE WHO THINKS I SHOULD KISS THEIR ASS TO GET THEM TO RECOGNIZE MY HUMANITY IS A FUCKING OPPRESSOR

What the fuck makes you think I would want someone like you OR Lisa Wade as an “ally”

YOU’RE NOT AN ALLY.

YOU’RE A FUCKING OPPRESSOR.

Anyone who thinks that I should be CALM in the face of rape, murder, torture, dismemberment, and all of the millions of people who FACILITATE THESE CRIMES INCLUDING YOU id a fucking oppressor, not an ally.

YOU ARE THE PEOPLE WHO ALLOW THIS TO KEEP HAPPENING.

Flip this situation around a little. If you were lawfully defending yourself with your gun and you had accidentally killed the wrong person, you would be in prison, at least for involuntary manslaughter. The police and the government, on the other hand, can make these mistakes and most people don’t seem to believe that the cop should be in prison. The hypocrisy stinks.

Factor in the fact that most people are trained to believe in the lawful goodness of the police force. “They know what’s best.”

So many accept this as fact because sometimes, innocents die in the pursuit of “justice.”

San Diego, CA: Valeria Munique Tachiquin, a 32-year old mother of five and a U.S. citizen, was shot and killed by a plainclothes Border Patrol agent last Friday afternoon in the City of Chula Vista.

On Monday, October 1st, Valeria’s father, Valentin Tachiquin, will give a statement at a press conference with local human rights activists from the American Friends Service Committee and Alliance San Diego.

The fatal incident occurred in a residential area in Chula Vista on Moss Street near Broadway.

Neighbors and eyewitnesses were shocked and feared for their safety when they saw a man shooting multiple times into the vehicle driven by Munique.  The shooter was later identified as a plainclothes Border Patrol agent who was apparently serving a warrant in a nearby residence.  Authorities have withheld his name.

The family states that Munique, a U.S. Citzen, was not the person Border Patrol was seeking.

The Border Patrol agent involved in the shooting was treated in a hospital but the extents of his injuries are unknown. Neighbors say they saw the plainclothes agent walking immediately after the incident.

“I want to know ‘why’?  What caused the Border Patrol agent to shoot my daughter multiple times?  My family wants answers, and we are seeking justice,” stated Valentin Tachiquin.

“There is a troubling and growing pattern of abuse and excessive use-of-force committed by Border Patrol agents; our community demands to know what led to such a brutal act by that plainclothes agent,” said Pedro Ríos, director of the American Friends Service Committee US Mexico Border Program.

This latest incidents comes at a time in which Border Patrol has been under fire by law makers who are calling for, “ a top-to-bottom review of CBP practices”.

“The Border Patrol continues to be an out of control agency that operates above the law,” said Christian Ramirez. “We need to continue to put pressure on Customs and Border Protection to call for transparency, accountability and justice.”

A candle light vigil is being organized for Monday afternoon at 6 p.m. with the family of Valeria Munique Tachiquin on the corner of Broadway and Moss Street near the location where the shooting took place.

Zimmerman claimed that Trayvon grabbed his head and slammed it into the sidewalk. Yet, “Exhibit ME-2,” fingernail scrapings from Trayvon, only showed the presence of blood from his right hand. “No DNA results foreign to Trayvon Benjamin Martin …were found….” Translation: Zimmerman’s blood isn’t present.

For all the punching claimed by Zimmerman and the injuries he suffered — the bloody nose, the bloody back of the head — “Exhibit ME-12,” Trayvon’s hoodie, had no traces of Zimmerman’s blood on it. There were three stains, two of which “gave chemical indications for the presence of blood.” Only one had a partial DNA profile that matched Trayvon. The right cuff, left cuff and lower sleeves of both arms of the hoodie found “No DNA results foreign to Trayvon Benjamin Martin….”

Of the four stains that “gave chemical indications for the presence of blood” on “Exhibit ME-8,” the shirt Trayvon wore underneath his hoodie, only one matched Zimmerman. Two matched Trayvon. The major and minor contributors for the fourth stain “could not be determined.” The right cuff and lower sleeve of the shirt had no DNA “foreign to” Trayvon. The left cuff and lower sleeve had “the presence of at least two individuals.” It is “assum[ed]” that Trayvon is the major contributor. But because of “the limited nature of the results . . . no determination can be made regarding the possible contribution” of Zimmerman to that DNA mix.

CHICAGO - A woman shot by an off-duty Chicago police officer on Wednesday morning died Thursday. Family members say she was an innocent bystander and are calling for an investigation into her death.

“How could this be justified? They took my sister away from me,” said Martinez Sutton, the brother of 22-year-old Rekia Boyd.

The suburban man is grieving the loss of his sister, who died Thursday at Mount Sinai Hospital after being shot in the head by an off-duty Chicago police officer.

Boyd and a man were both shot early Wednesday morning by an off-duty detective on the city’s West Side.

Just let it be known, the Ella in this song is Ella Baker, an unsung heroine in US History, especially as pertaining to Civil Rights. That the first line of this song directly refers to things that were happening fifty years ago should tell folk we’re nowhere near as post-racist as folk want to believe.  The proof of this is, I’ve yet to see the case of Trayvon Martin make national network news on televisions (please correct me if I’m wrong, as I only watch Good Morning America), although I do know it’s made some major online publications. That the murder of a black boy by the state is non-news…c’mon, people, c’mon; that his murderer gets to roam free - they sent Michael Vick to prison for murdering dogs; but a black child’s killer doesn’t even get arrested? God bless Amerikkka, huh?
