I’ve noticed a lot of people saying that Rachel/Lea just has the better voice for Broadway versus Mercedes/Amber. It’s more complicated than that, though. The overwhelming majority of Broadway musicals have been written by white people for white singers/actors to perform in front of majority white audiences. When people say “Broadway,” and especially when we’re talking about an old classic like West Side Story, they’re assuming a traditionally white sound.
And sure, Lea Michele has been trained in a Broadway style, which is part of the reason she totally kills songs like “My Man” and “Don’t Rain On My Parade.” But no amount of Broadway training will make her better than Amber Riley on Broadway hit songs like “I Am Telling You” or last night’s “It’s All Over.” And I’m willing to bet Naya Rivera would do better on something from In the Heights than Lea Michele.
tl;dr colorblind casting just doesn’t work if you judge POC by their ability to sing by traditionally white standards
Also, Will can go die in a fire.
And the other reason why they call Broadway “The Great White Way”…
And they are the same! “Mercedes is lazy. Rachel has handed Mercedes the spotlight on many occasions.” “Mercedes is a selfish diva” “Mercedes is not Broadway” “Amber Riley can’t act”, “All the cast of Glee is better than Amber Riley” “Amber Riley bores me”
You know? The same things had been said about Rutina Wesley (and this woman is a Juillard graduate). And in her time, the same things were said about Rita Moreno. If this is the way people see them, judged by race and color, then we have not evolve.
Is this the way people see my sister, my niece, my son, my Mercedes Mafia sisters, and myself?
To be a Debbie Downer, probably. The default for people of color is rarely anything positive. I wonder if RIB knew this would be the reaction folks would have…but that’s their privilege; they didn’t consider how folks would react to a chromatic having the audacity to try to take the lead position for herself without first asking permission, as you know.
Look at the response to Martha, Bonnie, even Alisha by a segment of the Misfits fandom. We cannot be black, female, visible, & pursuing our own dreams without some kind of backlash from people who will insist that we have no right to behave as full fledged humans all while insisting that our race & gender have nothing to do with their hate.
Ok, I Love Mercedes, She Is Amazing, and she has a great voice, but she is a selfish bitch, she doesn’t want the role, she only wants the attention, she only want to be a bitch with rachel, and sorry mercedes, but Jesse St. James is right, you are Lazy.
Also, it’s not so much that it’s unpopular but more unbalanced and uninformed, but thanks for playing.
How do these people think theater (musical or otherwise) works? You audition. Other people audition. Maybe you get the part. Maybe you don’t. No one owes you an unopposed audition.
