Almost every marginalized group that cites evidence of violence, especially police violence and abuse, is actually citing statistics against African-American members of that group.

girljanitor:

1. Police assault a gay man. It is reported and framed as an “anti-gay” attack. White gay people say “look at the terrible violence we face!”

He is a black man.

image

2. Feminists decry the horrific new developments in regard to the criminalization of pregnancy, i.e. people with uteri who are prosecuted and/or sent to prison for refusing a c-section, having a miscarriage or stillbirth, having a mental illness, being perceived as “irresponsible”, et cetera.

White women: “this is happening to women!!!” News stories invariably show the pregnant bellies of white women. The stories are written by white women, and are addressed to white women. Which is also cissexist.

This is happening to Black and Native American women like Regina McKnight and Martha Greywind:

First, we describe characteristics of the women and the cases, finding that low-income women and women of color, especially African American women, are overrepresented among those who have been arrested or subjected to equivalent deprivations of liberty.

who are poor, and often living in the South, with its rich history of forced sterilizations and eugenics. South Carolina especially showed preference for sterilizing African American women.

From the report:

For example, in South Carolina thirty-four of ninety-three cases came from the contiguous counties of Charleston and Berkeley.

3. A white Autistic person writes the line, “Being mentally ill means that I am more likely to be shot by police”, and explains why hiding a mental illness can be a survival tool.

Unfortunately, here in reality, those Autistic people who are shot to death by police can’t hide the immediate, visual fact that they are Black men.

4. The face of LGBT activism is white gay men writing about police violence toward white gay people. Pepper spray at a Pride Parade is big news. In fact, many articles defend a white gay man who assaulted a Black woman and told her to “go back to Africa”. White gay men love to write about how subject to violence they are.

The problem with that is, almost all of the violent crimes including murders are against gay people of color

and almost all of those (44 percent of overall) are against the “t” in LGBT

and nearly all of those crimes are against Trans* women of color

And those women are quite likely to be prosecuted, harassed, and/or arrested/assaulted by police when they are the VICTIMS of a violent crime.

Also, trans* women of color are sent to prison for surviving a vicious attack. After a trial in which evidence of the attacker’s racism, swastika tattoos, and criminal history is suppressed.

5. Disability advocacy organization in Washington decries disabled children being criminalized, arrested, and prosecuted for minor or nonexistent infractions. News sites report that Mississippi School-To-Prison Pipeline “targets African American AND disabled children”, and uses this image:

image

When in fact, ALL of the children targeted were children of color:

all of them “children of color,” says Jody Owens, with the Southern Poverty Law Center–were routinely arrested at Meridian schools allegedly on the say-so of teachers or administrators, handcuffed and taken to jail where they were held for days on end without benefit of a hearing, a lawyer, or understanding their Miranda rights.

Meridian county is 55% African-American, and about 70% of schoolchildren are African American.

Disabled children of color face torture, imprisonment, vicious beatings perpetrated by teachers, and are African American children with or without disabilities are 3 1/2 times more likely to receive “disciplinary action” against them in school than white students.

6. There is a huge outcry against the NRA’s suggestion of armed guards at Elementary schools in the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting.

A bare footnote or completely lost in this outcry is the fact that an overwhelming proportion of children of color, especially Black and Latino children, already go to schools with armed guards and police presence on the campus.

The notorious and unapologetic racist sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, Joe Arpaio, has sent out more than 3,000 untrained “posse” volunteers to “police” schools under his purview. This is when his “trained” deputies already torture, abuse, beat, and murder people of color in Maricopa County on a terrifyingly regular basis.

The problem is, if you are a Black student, the campus police may be quite likely to shoot you dead.

To come full circle, the student shot dead by police in the link above also had a mental illness.

Almost every marginalized group that cites evidence of overwhelming discrimination and violence, especially police violence and abuse, is actually citing statistics against African-American members of that group.

The point of all this is that journalism repeatedly fails to accurately report that people of color suffer the overwhelming majority of police violence. The racism built into the very foundations of American society and culture ensures that this violence continues, is under-reported, misrepresented as evidence of criminality, when it fact it is evidence of the criminalization of people of color, especially Black Americans.

If you are a white person, and you experience a particular axis of marginalization and want to give statistics on the violence you face as an oppressed person, especially in regards to police violence, you should consider checking whether these statistics accurately reflect the violence against white members of the marginalized group you belong to.

And also of note: police violence is the measure of which overtly sanctioned violence perpetrated by U.S. government and society is glaring gateway into overall violence and discrimination is perpetrated again people of color, especially Black Americans. It permeates the education system, the medical and mental health systems, the social security and welfare systems, the legal system, the higher education systems, the banking systems, the commercial and entrepreneurial systems, and every single institution.

Cop Shoots 10-Year-Old Boy With Taser For Refusing To Clean Patrol Car

ladylokiskidgloves:

Tw: police brutatlity

anarcho-queer:

“Career day” at Tularosa New Mexico Intermediate School went terribly wrong after a 10-year-old boy says a police officer used his Taser gun to show him what cops do to people who don’t follow orders.

Officer Chris Webb of the New Mexico Department of Public Safety is being sued in court after allegedly using his Taser-brand stun gun on a school playground to send 50,000 volts of electricity into a young boy’s body, forcing the child to blackout.

According to the complaint filed on behalf of the child, “Defendant Webb asked the boy, R.D., in a group of boys, who would like to clean his patrol unit,” when the officer came to the school earlier this year. “A number of boys said that they would. R.D., joking, said that he did not want to clean the patrol unit.”

Defendant Webb, the complaint suggests, responded by pointing his Taser at R.D. and saying, ‘Let me show you what happens to people who do not listen to the police.’’ The officer then allegedly fired two barbs from the device at the child’s chest, penetrating his shirt.

Instead of calling emergency medical personnel, Officer Webb pulled out the barbs and took the boy to the school principal’s office, the complaint continues. When he attempted to remove the weapon attached to his skin, though, the 100-pound child passed out. Since then, he has been left with scars that are described in court as resembling cigarette burns.

A representative for the child says the boy has been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder since the incident occurred on May 4.

“The boy, R.D., has woken up in the middle of the night holding his chest, afraid he is never going to wake up again,” guardian ad litem Rachel Higgins tells the court.

No reasonable officer confronting a situation where the need for force is at its lowest, on a playground with elementary age children, would have deployed the Taser in so reckless a manner as to cause physical and psychological injury, Higgins adds.

Higgins is now suing the New Mexico Department of Public Safety and Officer Webb on behalf of the child in Santa Fe County Court, where she seeks punitive damages for the boy for battery, failure to render emergency medical care, excessive force, unreasonable seizure, and negligent hiring, training, supervision and retention, Courthouse News reports.

Tamon Robinson’s Mother, Laverne Dobbinson, Owes NYPD $710 For Damages To Police Car That Killed Son

In April 2012, Tamon Robinson was struck and killed by an NYPD police car after Robinson was allegedly caught stealing cobblestones from a public housing complex.
Six months later, Robinson’s mother says the city is ordering the family to pay $710 to pay for the damages on the very car that killed her 27-year-old son.
45-year-old Laverne Dobbinson told The Daily News, “We’re still grieving, and this is like a slap in the face. They want my son to pay for damage to the vehicle that killed him. It’s crazy.”
An attorney for the family filed an intent to sue the city and hopes to prevent the department from issuing any repairs to the vehicle as the case is still under investigation. “In my 40 years of practicing law in this city I have never seen anything as heartless as this,” the lawyer told The News, referring to the bill sent to Tamon’s family.
According to police, the car was stopped when Robinson ran into it. Witnesses, however, maintain the car hit Robinson directly.
A witness described the incident, claiming, “They hit him. He flew up and he came down. They backed the car up, and they told him to get up. People were yelling out their windows screaming at the cops, ‘We saw what you did.’ ”
Robinson was rushed to a nearby hospital where he fell into a coma. While unconscious, cops kept him handcuffed to the hospital bed. Six days later, he was declared brain dead and his family made the decision to take him off the respirator.
Rev. Al Sharpton held a rally in honor of Robinson and demanded an investigation, which is still in process, to look into any criminal wrongdoing in the young man’s death.
An NYPD spokesman declined to comment on the $710 bill.

NYPD Officers Who Stripped, Beaten, Yelled Racial Slurs And Dumped A Black 14 Year Old By A Swamp, Fined $5,000 Each, No Jail Time
Two NYPD officers who pleaded guilty to dumping a teenager half-naked near a Staten Island swamp, but avoided significant punishment, have agreed to pay $5,000 each in reparations.
In 2007, officers Thomas Elliassen and Richard Danese had suspected Rayshawn Moreno, who was 14-years old at the time, of throwing eggs at passing cars on Halloween night and placed him into their patrol car.
They then drove to a swamp in Staten Island where they stripped Moreno of his shirt and shoes, demanding he lie facedown on a deserted roadway. Elliassen and Danese proceeded to kick the teenager and eventually left him stranded.
The victim was forced to walk a mile alongside railroad tracks to finally receive help.
Prosecutors say the officers also hurled racial slurs at Moreno, who is black, during the abuse.
The officers pleaded guilty, but escaped jail because Moreno refused to testify in court. Instead, Elliassen and Danese’s felony charges were relegated to violations and they were assigned to modified duty.
The Daily News reports that since the horrific incident, Moreno has been arrested eight times for a range of criminal activities including robbery, drugs, and weapons possession.

This is an outrage.

Video shows bloody ending to teen joyride

leonineantiheroine:

http://m.news.com.au/TopStories/pg/0/fi1171757.htm

A POLICE officer unleashed a series of savage blows to the head of a teenager bleeding from a bullet wound to the neck during a brutal arrest early yesterday.

Moments after he was pulled from a mangled car wreck in Kings Cross, Sydney, shocking footage shows police repeatedly striking Troy Taylor before dragging his limp body across the street.

An officer then places a knee on the teen’s blood-soaked back to handcuff him.

The 18-year-old, one of two teenagers shot by police during a dramatic chase, is then left lying in a pool of blood as dozens of stunned bystanders look on.

The teenagers, one just 14, were in a serious condition in St Vincent’s Hospital last night.

All of the boys and young men are Aboriginal. Yep they did the wrong thing by driving the car onto the pavement but also they seemed to be frightened of the police and there was no need for the cop to bash the kid after the car crashed.

This is what Mick Mundine had to say:

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/mick-mundine-horrified-by-video-of-arrest-of-shooting-victim-troy-taylor-in-kings-cross/story-e6freuy9-1226335217914

ABORIGINAL elder Mick Mundine was shocked and stunned by the way police arrested shooting victim Troy Taylor, 18, describing it as “pathetic.”

“It’s very wrong - this has to stop,” Mr Mundine said.

The respected Aboriginal community leader watched the dramatic and disturbing video footage in the offices of The Sunday Telegraph yesterday.

“I mean, how are they training them? What’s the training for? Where’s the commonsense?” said an emotional Mr Mundine, who is working with respected Redfern police commander, Superintendent Luke Freudenstein, to calm tensions in the inner-city suburb.

“They never had guns in the car, so why did they even shoot the kids?”

High Ranking NYPD Officials Used N-Word, Told Officers To ‘Treat Black People Like Animals’

Anonymous asked: You are straight up crazy if you think that just because you’re white, the cops are on your side.

payslipgig:

alexandraerin:

In an absolute sense, of course they’re not.

But here’s the important thing: when they murdered Rekia Boyd, they were on my side. When they tortured Raul Rosas to death, they were doing that to keep me safe. When they broke down the door to Kenneth Chamberlain’s house and killed him, they were doing that for me.

When they protected George Zimmerman, they were doing so with the understanding that the law’s purpose is to keep me safe from people like Trayvon, not the other way around.

These things are done on our behalf.

The cops are doing this for us.

Like the man said, “Nobody panics when things go according to plan, even if the plan is horrifying.”

Take all the people of color who have been murdered by police, security guards, or vigilantes in the past 45 days and imagine they were white. What would happen?  How would we react? We would panic. There would be revolution. We’d take it as a sign that the system is broken.

But we haven’t, so far. These deaths aren’t anything new or unusual. It didn’t suddenly happen that a cop can gun down an unarmed innocent citizen and win a good conduct award for it. This is the system, and we’ve accepted it because we’re not the ones in the cross hair and that made it easy to ignore most of the cases and write off or forget the ones we couldn’t help hearing about.

And here’s the point where I get to and delete this message without posting it and start over… I’ve done that two or three times.

Because I don’t know what to do about this. I don’t know how to meaningfully revoke my consent for the things that are done in my name, the senseless things that are done for no actual practical reason in the name of keeping me safe.

But it’s something we need to figure out.

Case in point: Occuply Wallstreet.  When the police suddenly were not on the side of the upper/middle class white kids protesting (though the police were still working for white people, just CEOs and politicians in specific) tumblr exploded.  All of the sudden, this was significant shit to be aware of and horrified by.  But the same and far, far more has been happening to people of color for generations.

It wasn’t new, it just wasn’t according to plan.  Thus, people reacted with shock and confusion because police brutality to PoC is expected, but police brutality affecting well-off white folks is scary.
