I was designing a banner for a university website to advertise upcoming business classes. The ad contained a stock photo of a group of business people. My client was a really sweet African American woman who is a great designer. But sometimes her judgement is clouded…

Client: It looks good, but please choose a more diverse image.

I realize my image ONLY contains white people, so I quickly find an image that contains two white men, one white woman, a black man and an Asian woman. I email it to her.

Client: I still don’t like the image you’ve chosen. It reinforces the “dominant role” of older white men. Please choose another image.

Baffled, this time I choose an image that contains a single white man, a black man and woman, an Asian man and a Hispanic looking female.

Client: Do you really feel that this image reflects the diversity our organization is striving for? Please choose another image!

Not understanding how an image could be more diverse than the one I chose. I jokingly inserted a picture from one of the university’s African American Women’s Studies classes. It contained four black females.

Client: Perfect! Thank you for understanding the diversity our organization is striving to achieve.

It’s totally normal that the designer didn’t even notice the first image they chose was all white people and that their second choice was still mostly white people, but putting an image of four Black women in an ad for business classes was done as a joke. Just want to make that clear. And the fact that a woman asking for “diversity” chose an image featuring all non-white non-men is the punchline of this story. This is some serious white male privilege/ white-male-as-neutral bullshit at work.

Sometimes *her* judgement is a little clouded. (But aw, she’s *sweet*. And … African-American, which had to be pointed out - and she was supposed to take the final image as a joke?)

yeah what a condescending douchebag

No one is biologically white, black, a PoC, etc.

It’s all a social/cultural construction.

Their are people with pale skin, kinky hair, slanted eyes etc.

But that’s all just evolution accommodating for the geographic areas your ancestors migrated to.

That being said, it does NOT mean that the oppression against races is make believe.

That shit is real as a motherfucker.

That is all.

To people wondering why POC’s respond with anger or sarcasm

ahandsomeshark:

When you say something stupid it’s because there is a never ending number of you saying stupid things. This is mostly about the firefly post I just reblogged. But here is a list of recent examples I can think of off the top of my head.

When angel coulby was cast as Guinevere 1000000 people threw a fit over historical inaccuracies and POC sent them links showing them how wrong they were

When Idris Elba was cast as Heimindall people freaked out and POC sent them links showing them how wrong they were

When Mad Men couldn’t put a POC on for more than 4 seconds at a time and people claimed it was accurate to the time period, people posted tons of sources showing how wrong that is

When brave came out with not one POC people posted links an wrote damn essays showing them how wrong they are.

Now people are coming up with bullshit about how there were no Asians in a universe that’s supposed to be half dominated by Asian countries because it’s base off old west time.

Like wtf how many times are POC supposed to sit here and be google for people who insist on entering into discussions without doing simple fact checking themselves. Like I can understand why “SJ” blogs are always so quick to jump to anger or sarcasm BECAUSE THIS SHIT IS OLD and it’s fucking 2012 and people still don’t know how to use google.

here we go around in circles again.

waah white women don’t understand.

waah WOC are always pointing out the negatives.

waah women. waah men.

notice a pattern? there’s a lot of exclusion and a lot of complaining.

where’s the dialogue? you can make however many documentaries as you want, but the fact of the matter is, no one is really getting it. the language is distorted and lost among a ton of other things.

and that’s my main issue with feminism.

it’s overwhelming. there are a shit ton of issues to address and everyone’s trying to do it in their own way.

on the flipside, progress is being made in small sectors.

but… when is it all going to come together?

i’m really tired of hearing about beauty standards. really tired of it.

CAN WE STEP OUTSIDE OF OUR BODIES, PLEASE?

also, can we recognize the fact that for many “white”/white women, this whole concept of ” ‘white’ ‘woman’ as ‘beauty’ standard” “specified characteristics most commonly found in ‘white’ ‘women’” is a new concept for A LOT of people? WOC AND white women (AND MEN AND EVERYONE INBETWEEN) are coming to terms with their shit every day. it’s a process. a slow one. an individual one.

so before you go making claims that “white” “women” (as a whole? really?) aren’t “getting it” please realize that the battle is simultaneous and on-going and everychanging.

not everyone has been taught to “see”/”recognize”/challenge/understand in the same way.

i’m one of those people who has taken a step back from this whole ideology because i realized i was following a specific mindset. in taking a step back, i’ve noticed a lot of patterns that leave a bad taste in my mouth — finger pointing and really aggressive language that tends to put people on the defensive way before they can even piece together thoughts or articulate an opinion.

i’m tired of being divided.

“white” “women” are just as justified in creating/consuming/analyzing documentaries on beauty standards as anyone else. once that has happened, we can talk about privilege. there’s a whole list. and they intersect.

instead of harping on what one “race” or group is NOT doing or what they are doing WRONG, let’s focus that energy inward and question what it is inside of us and about our prescribed/chosen identities that triggers the bad taste in our mouths.

work in progress, eh? we can’t do everything at once. not everyone can be serviced or satisfied by the movements or the ideology.

you know what happens when you throw terms like “universal standard” “privilege” “oppression” “intersectionality” “colonialism” and the like at people who have NO fucking idea what they mean? they shut down and the buck stops there.

take a moment to explain. take a moment to dialogue.

dialogue =/= debate

back to grading these vocabulary exams. bye.

Look at the white woman make her self the victim after silencing WOC

Look at this bitch really want to talk about “dialogue” when she wasn’t listening in the first place

Look at the white woman making her self out to be a fucking Marty after throwing WOC under the bus and getting called out for it

” i’ve noticed a lot of patterns that leave a bad taste in my mouth” SHE doesn’t like what we’re saying so WE’RE the ones who are wrong

We’re interpreting our own lives wrong because some white bitch don’t like what we’re saying

waah WOC are always pointing out the negatives.

” there’s a lot of exclusion and a lot of complaining. “

A white woman talking about a movement for all women being dominated by white women and then has the audacity to talk about exclusion.

Why are WOC being “abrasive” after YET AGAIN, being silence by white women and then told we’re talking about our own lives in the wrong way because it leaves a bad taste in her mouth.

This bitch is talking about fucking “dialogue” when WOC made our selves VERY CLEAR but because we’re saying things that leaves a “bad taste” in her mouth, we’re wrong

She’s minimised our lives to “complaining”

Bitch didn’t listen to anything we said and has the gall to talk about US “take a minute to dialogue.” Fuck off

You make my stomach turn. Reasons why white feminist are the scum of the Earth

oh goodness me! how dare we call white folks white and want to talk about myself once in a while instead of their problems all the fucking time! how dare we not be willing to put things affecting us on the back burner YET AGAIN for a greater good that is neither great nor good for us at all!

how dare we not sit around and wait for other folks’ consciousness and ability to see us as human beings! it’s not like we haven’t been waiting for that shit for centuries already or something!

yeah okay. talk that “divisive” shit if you want to. we’re only dividied as long as you fail to recognize my humanity, which you clearly do, hunty

She’s not interested in dialogue, discussion, or listening to anything that doesn’t pump her ego. Dismiss this yotch & move on.

hmm, so…because i didn’t instantly reblog every post you made with comments to my post i’m all of a sudden avoiding the conversation? being dismissive and divisive? voicing my opinion makes me a yotch? the fact that i’m not quick to pounce and start jumping to conclusions all of a sudden makes anything i say null and void?

white feminist are the scum of the earth? wow. do you know any self-identified white women who identify with feminism? are they all scum?

voicing my opinion is “playing the victim”? couldn’t a “scum of the earth” feminist (or anyone else for that matter) sit there and say the same about you? talk about silencing…

i wrote my post with the intention of opening up the floor for discussion. i’m okay with reading/listening to what you have to say. but the fact that you sit there and try to cut me down, makes me less interested in engaging in conversation.

for the sake of clarification.. when it comes to talking about feminism, keep in mind that we all have our own definitions. my feminism isn’t about equality, it’s about liberation. my feminism isn’t solely concerned with women, everyone is involved. why? because when i sit here and think of my various points of oppression, i can also list a couple of privileges. i’m not free if you’re not free. she is not free if i am not free. we are not free if they are not free.

what’s your feminism like?

my main issue is the “us” versus “them” mentality. it’s one thing to recognize the inequality and separation, and another to perpetuate it.

ask yourself this: why were you so quick to assume that i am a white woman? is it impossible for a woman of color to have this point of view? why?

White women contribute to the oppression of WOC & of MOC. That’s a fact. You want to ignore history & social context to try to play stupid word games? You’re on some bullshit. I don’t need to know your definition of feminism to know that you’re full of shit. Wanting white women to stop asking for one way solidarity isn’t perpetuating a damned thing. As for why people think you’re white/white identified? You haven’t made a single unique argument in this derail. In fact it’s like you’re reading off the same script that white women who want to pretend signs like “Woman is the Nigger of The World” are okay & relevant. You’re a tiresome yotch, not because of when you reblog, but because of what you say when you do it. If you’re a visibly black WOC your wake up call is coming. And if you’re not? Welp, everyone was right about your bigoted ignorant bullshit. Get some facts under your belt or stay the fuck out of our posts.

I never once said that I ignored or disagreed with that fact. Language is a construct of oppression. Because I chose to bring that into the discussion, I’m all of a sudden playing word games?

You don’t need to know my definition of feminism? Alright. It’s blatantly clear that the one who is not interested in dialoguing is you. I was unaware that I needed to wave a flag with all of my identifiers in order to enter a thread. May I remind you that you were one of the people who assumed my identity.

We’re both on the same boat: I’m still waiting for you to contribute something new to this thread.

I can’t even say that I’m surprised… you’re still stuck on the dichotomy.

As for “staying the fuck out of [your] posts”…well…one way to push me out is to stop reblogging and responding to mine.

Have a great night.

Your idea of dialogue is to claim someone’s expression of frustration with reality is Oppression Olympics. Since you clearly don’t know what that means you were told to educate yourself. Your response was this post which only crossed my dash because someone else noticed your bullshit. Do note, I recommended dismissing you, not wasting time & energy on doing the heavy lifting for you. I stand by that. I didn’t assume your identity. I just noted the reality of your words. I’m not a feminist, I’m a womanist, so no I’m not interested in what you’re telling yourself. You brought nothing new to any of these conversations. And your ignorance is your problem. If you don’t know historic or social context? Time to do some research instead of playing the victim & pretending you didn’t fuck up & get called on it. You keep telling yourself the conversation is about dichotomy so you can play enlightened & not actually have any skin in the game. It’s better that way since you’re clearly not about anything like actual work.

thinkspeakstress

White people KNOW they’re being offensive. They just don’t care.

thinkspeakstress:

Let a movie crack a Black joke.

An Asian joke.

A joke about Middle Eastern people or anybody who looks it, being a terrorist.

Let white folk in a film sexualize Native Americans, or exoticize the women (or men in some cases) of any PoC group.

Let a celebrity make a joke or offensive remark about a non-white person, or an ethnic group on a whole.

Let a white person go on national television in blackface, redface, yellowface, brownface, etc.

White folk will laugh right on along and excuse it at every turn.

“Oh, it’s just a joke.” “It’s not meant to be offensive.” “Relax. You don’t have to take everything so seriously.” “Well, but race jokes are funny! Doesn’t make me racist to laugh.” “I don’t see how that’s offensive!” “How is that offensive?”

But let a non-white person—famous, obscure, anywhere, at any time—say the magic words: “white people.”

A full blown joke about the a stereotype that led to the genocide of a people is hilarious. But two simple words—no context needed—will have white folks flipping their lids.

Well guess what, white people?

If jokes about race are fine, so long as you aren’t the butt of it?

If you “don’t get” how a race joke is offensive, but at the same time, tense up when there is a film called, “Dear White People,” or when a PoC anywhere says, “white people”?

Then you need to shut up because you 1. are lying 2. think we’re really that stupid 3. are so far deep in denial about your own racism that there isn’t any hope of you not drowning. Either way, you are full of shit. We been done seent y’all.

But you seriously think ain’t nobody onto you?

Hah.

Hahahaha.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

:|

Note: Oh, and white folk who are going to comment that “Well, I think jokes about white people are hilarious,” and “Well, this white person can appreciate a good joke about white people,” and “I don’t get offended.” ….yeah, shut up. I know you exist. This isn’t about you. And I don’t need the special snowflake white people announcing their presence; nobody put you on the guest list anyway.

I’m reading this book. Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black hair In America By Ayana D Byrd and Lori L Tharp.
I have hit page 33. I have lost all patience for 1. White people appropriating ANY symbol/word/concept/hairstyle that is even REMOTELY attached to black people’s hair. No dreadlocks. No afros. No natural hair. No cornrows or canerows. No Chiney bumps no nappy no kinky. And I personally will do my best to support BLACK hair care product companies, period. 2. White people touching, commenting up or otherwise engaging with black people’s hair except in the case of having black kids in which 3. ANY EXCUSES you people have for not thoroughly investigating the history and current practices of black hair care. Like there is no fucking excuse. NONE. ZIP. NADA.   End of story period done. After what you and your ancestors did and continue to do,  there is NO EXCUSE. THERE IS NO PATIENCE. THERE IS NO FORGIVENESS. It is OVER.
In addition… There is NO PATIENCE for light skin people like myself and lighter whining on and on about how they are targeted for being lightskinned and people hated their curly hair and were jealous and envious and…. NO. NO. NO. Those clutch mag articles? STFD and STFU, oh ye writers thereof. There were fucking CHURCHES with a finetooth comb  as a membership test. To say nothing of old traditions in HBCU’s and business organizations and … NO.  To say NOTHING of whats going on STILL. RIGHT NOW. NO. That was survival tactics, and it is and was despicable all the same. NO. Deal with it. Process it. And work to dismantle it.

tell me about my white privilege while you get scholarships just for being a minority

Another thing that I just enjoy so much about privilege-denying, racist white folks’ arguments on Affirmative Action (besides the whole neglecting to acknowledge that white women have been & are the overwhelming beneficiaries of AA thing) is that they think this ONE concession somehow negates the 10,000,000,000,000X10^10 unearned advantages they receive as white folks living in a deeply white supremacist society.

I could go on… but since I know this fool won’t read these links anyway, I don’t think it’s necessary.

Black couple's wedding banned by white Mississippi Baptist church

mslorelei:

No, we are not a post-racial society. I cannot even imagine how this church would react if a mixed-race couple wanted to marry in their church. They probably wouldn’t even be allowed to attend.

I can, however, VERY CLEARLY imagine the reaction Jesus might have to this horrifically un-Christian behavior.

Number of young African American women in prison rises

darkjez:

Nikki Jones, a sociologist from UC Santa Barbara and Meda Chesney Lind, University of Hawaii, and attendee of the conference, has studied the statistics of imprisoned black girls for over 10 years and explained, “we have never seen these kind of numbers before,” reports EthnoBlog.

So far, the cause for this epidemic has been attributed to national zero tolerance policies and a justice system that treats girls of color differently than white girls.

http://madamenoire.com/50225/numbers-of-young-african-american-women-in-prison-rise/

“Here’s a lesser-known red flag in the black community: the fastest growing incarcerated population in the country is African American girls and young women. What does not seem to be rising however, is the number of black girls who are actually committing crimes.”

And just so you know-
