To people wondering why POC’s respond with anger or sarcasm

ahandsomeshark:

When you say something stupid it’s because there is a never ending number of you saying stupid things. This is mostly about the firefly post I just reblogged. But here is a list of recent examples I can think of off the top of my head.

When angel coulby was cast as Guinevere 1000000 people threw a fit over historical inaccuracies and POC sent them links showing them how wrong they were

When Idris Elba was cast as Heimindall people freaked out and POC sent them links showing them how wrong they were

When Mad Men couldn’t put a POC on for more than 4 seconds at a time and people claimed it was accurate to the time period, people posted tons of sources showing how wrong that is

When brave came out with not one POC people posted links an wrote damn essays showing them how wrong they are.

Now people are coming up with bullshit about how there were no Asians in a universe that’s supposed to be half dominated by Asian countries because it’s base off old west time.

Like wtf how many times are POC supposed to sit here and be google for people who insist on entering into discussions without doing simple fact checking themselves. Like I can understand why “SJ” blogs are always so quick to jump to anger or sarcasm BECAUSE THIS SHIT IS OLD and it’s fucking 2012 and people still don’t know how to use google.

atheistme:

The fundamental problem with your thesis is that you’ve bought into this bullshit notion of “sj bloggers.”  It’s a problem because you’ve allowed someone to tell you that while most bloggers can just blog like they’re blogging and act like they’re people with a full range of emotions, there’s this set of other bloggers who they’ve defined as being in a special category called “sj bloggers” and they have to live up to some made-up standard that you’ve bought into.  It is not merely coincidence that the people who get thrown into this box are people writing about how various social injustices impact their lives.  It is merely not an intellectual exercise for them.

Your second problem is that you think you’re some sort of ally, but absolutely nothing I said in the above post is something that people haven’t been saying for quite some time now and you’ve ignored them.  I know you’ve ignored them because the phrase “sj blogger” is still a part of your vocabulary despite post after post of people saying they aren’t “sj bloggers.”  If you hear it now that a cis white guy like me is saying it, that’s a strong indicator about who you do and don’t hear.

Because your post is based on that false premise, it’s entirely wrong — math errors work like that.  But I’m going to highlight some particularly wrong moments in the wrongness.  It’s an opportunity for you to live up to your assertion that you learn from your mistakes.

While I agree that people in the majority will never be able to fully understand what it’s like to be a minority, or what these people go through, that does not take away their capability to be empathetic, to educate themselves, and to speak out in support of those who need it.

You have confused speaking out in support of a thing and speaking as if one is an expert on a thing, or even has first hand knowledge of a thing.

The way to fix all of the ism’s and phobias in our society is not to yell and scream. You are never going to achieve equality by calling people names, making personal attacks, making baseless assumptions about another persons character, pointing fingers, or telling the person you are speaking with the world would be better off without them.

You just can’t advocate for equality that way. It’s not ever going to work.

You are misunderstanding the purpose of what you’re terming “yelling and screaming.”  It can only be described as an education attempt in the sense that burns educate about what happens when you touch a stove:  there may be some education but that was no one’s intent.  The intent is to enforce a boundary that has been violated, the violation of which causes immediate pain and threatens worse.

If you really want to address the problem of prejudices in society, you have to educate people.

As noted above, there is a kind of education going on here — it’s just not the primary goal.  When bad behavior elicits a strong and uncomfortable response, the actor is educated not to behave that way — refer back to hot stoves and burns.  Do you really think that these people going after Riley, Karnythia, etc. don’t know that they’re being racist?

You are NEVER going to get people to be willing to be open minded about your cause by making them feel attacked. That is basic human nature.

You have again confused an attempt to make someone open minded with an attempt to make someone stop behaving badly.

As much as the hivemind on tumblr would like you to think that the best think a majority person can do for minorities is to sit down and shut up, but I am here to tell you that is untrue, and absolutely unrealistic. The minorities NEED the majority to understand. They NEED the majority to speak up and advocate for equality.  The system is never going to change if the majority of the system thinks it’s fucking great. That is reality. And no matter how much that fucking sucks, we all need to learn how to make the best of it, and advocate for change.

This is all bullshit.  Utter bullshit, false and ahistorical from start to finish, every word.  History records nowhere, at no time a group in power changing because those in power achieved enlightenment and suddenly realized there was a better way than their prior brutality.  Groups in power change because they notice that their current brutality has backfired on them beyond their ability to endure or alter.

I really want to write about why this trend of “sj bloggers” and the hive mind it’s created on tumblr irks me so much. I am going to write this post, and then I am going to try my best to wipe my hands of it, and go on talking about all things godless.

If at any point during this post you thing to yourself “god, this girl is a fucking moron” i would like to direct you to the unfollow button. If you are not willing to respect my thoughts on these issues, please see yourself out.

I’m going to be completely honest with you guys. I am a white girl, who comes from a place with a lot of privilege. My family came over to America from Armenia in the early 1900’s. When they got here they had absolutely nothing, all of their belongings were taken from them, but they managed to turn their lives around. They brought themselves up from nothing, and ended up being very successful. Their white skin is no doubt a factor in all that they were able to achieve. I am very proud of what my family members were able to accomplish in their lives, despite all the hardships they went through to get there, but that doesn’t mean that I’m insensitive to the fact that this isn’t an achievable reality for everyone.

There is a hivemind on tumblr that people who belong in the majority can’t understand what minorities go through, therefor, shouldn’t have an opinion or be willing to speak on the issue.

While I agree that people in the majority will never be able to fully understand what it’s like to be a minority, or what these people go through, that does not take away their capability to be empathetic, to educate themselves, and to speak out in support of those who need it.

You just can’t advocate for equality that way. It’s not ever going to work.

If you really want to address the problem of prejudices in society, you have to educate people. (note: I’m not talking about the best way to address prejudices in government and organizations, only the general thought of the population. Because really, that is the first step.) You are NEVER going to get people to be willing to be open minded about your cause by making them feel attacked. That is basic human nature. You are not going to show someone how to be a better person by yelling and prompting a defensive reaction. If you want to show someone how to be a better person, you have to be a better person. You have to show them what it’s like to be empathetic. You have to show them  why it’s important to care, and then show them what caring looks like.

No one understands better than people like me what it is to come from a place of privilege. I am still, to this day, trying to unlearn prejudices I was raised to believe about society. Thats the truth. I don’t try to make excuses for it. But I am very aware of it. I keep an open mind. I actively try to educate myself. I learn from my mistakes and I move on. I am a better person than I was 3 years ago, and in 3 years I will be a better person than I am now.

As much as the hivemind on tumblr would like you to think that the best think a majority person can do for minorities is to sit down and shit up, but I am here to tell you that is untrue, and absolutely unrealistic. The minorities NEED the majority to understand. They NEED the majority to speak up and advocate for equality.  The system is never going to change if the majority of the system thinks it’s fucking great. That is reality. And no matter how much that fucking sucks, we all need to learn how to make the best of it, and advocate for change.

Dialogue is probably the best way to combat the prejudices in our society, short of diversity education (which, should include dialogue anyways). Minorities and majorities need to sit down and talk. And it cannot be a one-sided conversation. We need to listen to each other. We need to bounce ideas off of each other. We need to learn and grow as a population together

Because at the end of the day there is no “minority” or “majority.” It doesn’t matter who is white or black, gay or straight, gay or cis, or anything inbetween, or anything else. We are all humans. We are all made of the same stuff. We’re all stuck on this planet together for a short time, and we should spend that time loving and caring about one another, rather than tearing each other apart.

Thank you for listening. And when I say listening, I mean reading.

Love you guys.

No.

(I’m a white, gender fluid, woman fyi)

There is a hivemind on tumblr that people who belong in the majority can’t understand what minorities go through, therefor, shouldn’t have an opinion or be willing to speak on the issue.

This just isn’t true. At least not judging from any of the “SJ” (in quotes because that title is forced on some of them) blogs I follow. You CAN have an opinion! We/they GET that you empathize with us/them. What you see as having an opinion is really you skewing what’s going on. We/they don’t WANT or NEED YOUR opinion. If you are not a part of the oppressed group there is literally NOTHING new you can ADD to the conversation. If you have not lived the experience you will ALWAYS come from a place of ignorance, a place of less experience.

while I agree that people in the majority will never be able to fully understand what it’s like to be a minority, or what these people go through, that does not take away their capability to be empathetic, to educate themselves, and to speak out in support of those who need it.

The problem comes when you speak OVER a person’s lived experiences, and because you are a part of the majority, people from the majority will listen to you OVER them. And by doing this YOU, yes YOU, are actively erasing the oppressed person. Because we all know this happens, so it really is best for you to keep your mouth shut and let the person with the experience speak, and if someone of the majority refuses to believe them you can agree with the oppressed person and back them up, but you should not speak FOR them.

The way to fix all of the ism’s and phobias in our society is not to yell and scream. You are never going to achieve equality by calling people names, making personal attacks, making baseless assumptions about another persons character, pointing fingers, or telling the person you are speaking with the world would be better off without them.

No, this just isn’t true. If you want I can give you any number of blogs I follow that will tell you that being nice, being a doormat, coddling the oppressor, does not help. Fighting back against the oppressor, against the abuser does NOT make the abused just as bad as them. They are just trying to survive in a world, that is many times, ready to KILL them for speaking out. YOU need to be aware that often times, you are speaking to a person who is ALWAYS under ATTACK in our world. There is not one second that they get relief, being angry, being defensive is a survival tactic.

It is not the responsibility of the abused to educate the abuser. And really, the “SJ” blogs I follow do do this. The problem comes when people refuse to listen and demand that they show them where they messed up, where they went wrong. If they had been listening the whole time they would have known, but people are so caught up in their privilege they cannot see it. That is not the problem of the oppressed, it is not their job to fix the oppressor. Once again, the oppressed are the ones being defensive, the oppressors are the aggressors.

The best thing a member of the majority person can do is sit down and shut up when a member of the minority is speaking. You think the changes that have happened in the system came because the majority spoke over the minority, that’s erasure right there. I can’t believe you are actually advocating that the majority SHOULD speak over and erase the minority. There are plenty of posts on Tumblr that detail how to be a good Ally and knowing when, and when not to speak is VERY important. No one is saying we shouldn’t all work together, but the problem is that when we do people get erased.

IT SHOULD BE A ONE SIDED CONVERSATION BECAUSE THE PRIVILEGED NEED TO LISTEN. THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN ADD TO THE CONVERSATION THAT THEY HAVEN’T ALREADY EXPERIENCED. And I admit this is something that has been very hard for me to learn. I want to add my opinion so bad sometimes, I feel like I have something really useful to say, but I’ve learned I don’t. And because I have a hard time controlling myself sometimes I will not follow that person’s blog. I don’t have the right to invade their space with my unwanted commentary that isn’t even worth a grain of salt to the conversation they are having.

I’m just gonna say that studies show that “Color Blindness” is a symptom of racism (something I’ve learned from “SJ” blogs btw) We aren’t all the same! We need to celebrate our differences, we need to understand each other, and that cannot happen when you erase their lived experiences by thinking they’re just like you.

I really think you are directing that last paragraph to the wrong people too. The oppressed WISH they could just live their lives, but the oppressors make sure that doesn’t happen. You need to be telling them to treat others like fucking people before we start talking about world peace.

I hope you read what I have said and take it to heart. I haven’t been mean and I really haven’t gotten angry. Even though you started out your post with an insult.

Excellent collecting!

Read it all, bolded some of the worst bits & really it’s a giant ball of privileged fail that gave me White Liberal Bingo inside of five minutes. This whole post is what happens when someone thinks that marginalized people have to prove their humanity & play some variation of Mammy via allowing tone policing, accepting respectability politics, & smiling through dozens of macro & micro aggressions until maybe possibly the colorblind, genderblind, sexuality blind politics stop being as harmful as they’ve always been & people decide we’re worth having some kind of rights that they’re comfortable with even as they continue to position their bodies as normal & our bodies as having traits to be tolerated/ignored. Fuck you if you think this is a good post or a good approach. We’ve heard it all before & the outcome is always the same hence the part where we want marginalized voices to be centered. Also, if you can only think of people as minorities? You’re an asshole.

I’m starting to think we may need to break a Tumblr rule and talk about Tumblr outside of Tumblr.

A big reason why this shit continues is because too many of us want to keep this lil’ magical bubble of Social Media to ourselves. Nothing but fungus grows in the dark.

Shine some light on this bullshit and see if the negative publicity doesn’t cause Tumblr to re-think some of this shit. If you attend tech/social media conferences or write in other forums, talk about this bullshit. Let other people know what the fuck is going down.
